Mr. G.

Thank you for sharing your thoughtful analysis.

I do get the idea that Microsoft is in somewhat different market. Microsoft is also catching up in large size enterprises application server along with big marketer in mid size enterprises application server.
Don't you think they(Oracle and Microsoft) are competing in the application server market?

It would be great if you can share your points on how they are not in the same market?

Gary - I tend to disagree about BEA and IBM FUD. Sure there are some customers that hate Oracle out there, and will want to instead fall into IBM's warm, deep embrace. But some of the FUD has been eroded by the way Oracle has dealt with recent acquisitions. Most enterprises don't fear federation nearly as much as they fear the products they have acquired not being supported. I think to a large extent the BEA attack time has already been factored into value...

Mr G,

Great call on the Telco angle - Although Telcos have historically been more interested in hard-core object middleware than the "fluff" that the platform players layer on top of it (hence the relative success of CORBA in telco, and BEA's continued success with WebLogic/Tuxedo).

I think you're underplaying the challenges that Oracle will face in the merger, Erik's to-do list in terms of the product road-map makes a lot of sense... but is much easier to write about than do.

And on SOA market-leadership, I think you're right that this will put Oracle into second behind IBM as the Enterprise SOA market-leaders... but there's still a whole lot of SOA going on that doesn't use either of their platforms (all those SOA friendly PHP apps for example...)

I'd put "home grown" SOA in the lead still at this stage.

I'd be interested to know why you think the news isn't great for IBM... to me this gives IBM's sales and marketing people 6 months of "BEA Attack" time, targeting the very top-end users who are very prone to punish uncertainty... because it makes them so nervous. WebSphere is still yonks ahead of Oracle even after BEA's numbers are added.

I for one would like more perspectives on the implications of these two acquisitions on the Financial companies since I think in the next year they'll all get hit by a huge fast moving truck...our sliding economy.

Thanks Ian. I plan a dialectic post on Monday bringing together the analysis from me and Stephen, looking at both the Oracle and Sun moves and putting them in context.

Good analysis James, I think you have nailed it.

One thing that I wonder is the relationship between Oracle and Sun? Traditionally there were strong ties but it is uncertain how close the two companies were working together in recent times. The two deals would appear to put a pretty big wedge between the Oracle and Sun. Do you agree?
