While I agree, networking is an essential way to get new projects, so is actively seeking out RFPs. I took a slightly different tact, but along the same lines: I created the RFP Database at http://www.rfpdb.com

My concept was if I created a destination site for organizations to post their RFPs, and for vendors to find RFPs, that I would create brand awareness for my company at the same time.

[...] We got a chance to talk to Sun yesterday about its Startup Essentials program, which recently got a friendly ding from Matt Mullenweg, and a mea culpa from Sun CEO Jonathan Schwartz. I parsed the online conversation as a new kind of online, community-based RFP mechanism: Every Blog a potential RFP: The new sales battleground. [...]

[...] 24th, 2007 · No Comments James Governor shows once again why, if you are a small business owner or even just looking for ajob, you should be actively discussing your topics and your industry in industry forums or even the blogosphere. To some degree, it can be like shouting upward at leaden skies to try to break through to the key people that you need to reach. If you are an active part of the industry's discussions, key people that might not otherwise look at you are likely to hear about you from people that they will see and hear.
James,
Spot on. Normally if the first thing you hear about a deal is the RFP, you are invited to the party ot make up the numbers.
One of the best RFP responses I ever heard was from a top SAP sales guy when a partner from one of the big consulting firms slapped a monster 300 page RFP down on the table.
The sales guy responded
"you guys know our software really well, I mean you must do if you want the implementation?"

The partner then replied, "yes, of course. we have 1000s experienced and certified consultants"

The sales guy said
"Great, then get one them to fill it in"
