An email is 100% easier to handle. So much easier to forward to someone else too. It's gotten to the point that I don't leave messages on people's voice mail unless I know they don't do email (which is rare these days). I'm turning 41 this year, so this isn't youth-related. Another great advantage of email: you can review before sending, and you are not limited by the arbitrary-length BEEP that signals your recording just ended. I completely agree with voice mail.
